The Taj Mahal is a well-known building and monument often featured in books, magazines and movies.

It is definitely one place that you need to add to your “Must Travel-To” List. Just being in the presence of it is breathtaking and the history is even more so.

A few of our writers have been to visit the Taj Mahal, so we thought we would share with you what to expect when you are visiting.

1. On the practical side, arrive early. Taj Mahal visiting hours are from sunrise to sunset, typically from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except on Friday (which is a day of prayer). Tourists start lining up as early as 5:30. By 8am the grounds may be overflowing. More people means a less peaceful visit, and no chance of getting a picture of just yourself with the Taj.

2. Do a little research and reading before you go. There is such a rich and colourful history about the Taj Mahal, it’s worth looking up as it’ll make your experience that much more fulfilling.

3. Go in with lots of time. It may take hours to get the full experience and essence of the Taj Mahal. You can listen to an audio recording as you do the walk-through, you can look at architecture and all the amazing details, and you’ll probably need some time to just sit and stare, in awe.

4. No food is allowed inside, just water. So make sure you eat before your visit.

5. No pictures are allowed inside the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal so you’ll just have to use your memory for that. And for all you photographers, no tripods allowed on your visit to the Taj.

6. There is a superstition that once you visit the Taj Mahal you should never look back at it when you are leaving. Apparently if you do, you have to visit again. The choice of what you do when you leave is up to you!
