Simple Ways to Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D)

This time of the year can get many people down. The holidays are over, everyone is back to work and school and it is still winter. The days are short and dark, and sunshine is usually at a minimum.

This can often cause people to feel blue and depressed. You may not know this, but it is a common ailment that is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or S.A.D. This usually happens in the winter when there is a lack of light in the environment.

There are ways you can combat S.A.D. that are simple and easy, and worth a try to lift your spirits.

1. Exercise
Working out has been proven to give you more energy, lift your mood and get your endorphins and adrenaline going. This is exactly what you need when you’re feeling a bit down. If you experience S.A.D., try incorporating exercise into your day whether it’s a 20 minute walk, a YouTube exercise video or a class at the gym.

2. Light
Since the days are shorter, take advantage of the light when you can. If it’s sunny, sit outside or go for a walk and bask in the glow. If there isn’t much light or you’re inside when there is, you can find special lamps that are sold to give you some light and energy during those winter months.

3. Meet with a Friend
Call a friend who you enjoy talking to or who really inspires you and then meet up for a date. Getting out of your routine and chatting with someone about how you are feeling can help.

4. Music
Music can be so uplifting and energizing! When you’re feeling down you can crank up your favourite songs and have a little dance party and you really will feel happier. If loud music isn’t an option, slip on the headphones and then play your favourite tunes while you’re getting some chores done. You’ll notice that the day will feel better.

5. Vitamin D
Darker days and less sun also means your body is getting less vitamin D. Taking a supplement or eating more foods that are rich in vitamin D can help lift your mood and your energy during the darker winter days.

Always consult a medical professional and if you are unsure of what you are feeling or of your symptoms. Depression affects many people and may need to be treated by a physician.
